A good wood deck plan usually includes the type of wood to use since the quality of the deck material will ensure the life of the deck. In making a wood deck plan, there are five possible materials that owners can choose from. Each of these materials has varying degrees of color grain, texture, resistance to decay and insects, and likewise requires various levels of treatment to make them long-lasting.

The pressure-treated wood is the most popular choice for deck materials in a wood deck plan as used in several countries, including the US. This is because the pressure-treated wood is more economical and longer lasting than other decking materials. The wood used is southern yellow pine and grain patterns are very prominent in this material.

The western red cedar has a color range from light browns to salmon pink. This material will require a regular treatment or it will turn into a very dark brown color. Though considered a soft wood, it is considered in a wood deck plan because of its higher durability than most wood material due to its high resistance to decay.

The color of the redwood material varies from light red to dark reddish brown. The redwood is also known for its high resistance to decay. Redwood is a soft wood that quickly weathers into a yellowish-red.

Ipe or imported hardwoods are dense and tight-grained wood with color ranging from red-amber to dark brown hues. Similar to the pressure-treated wood, imported hardwoods are very resistant to decay and bugs. These hardwoods weather into a silvery-gray color very fast. This wood material is not usually used in a wood deck plan because it is very hard to install. An owner will usually shell out more money just for the installation.

The true Mahogany wood used in a wood deck plan has a woven look in its grain and usually have a course texture. This is because not all mahogany has a resistance to decay that is required for outdoor use. The medium to dark red and brown species, however, are more resistant to decay.
